About

ERA Chair iSTARS

ERA Chair iSTARS – Informatics and Statistical Tools for the Advancement of Research Success – project is both strategic and an effective key to release, capacitate and uplift the clinical/medical research potential through the virtuous cycle of better data science, more data use, better research questions, higher impact publications, and greater ability for winning competitive grants, leading to more resources and more value for medical studies at the Lisbon School of Medicine (FMUL).

iSTARS will establish a new unit on data science to nucleate FMUL’s vision in this area of having robust capabilities in:

  • Data science, including biostatistics and computational biology, data management, and data processing.

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning in medicine.

  • Big data, including electronic health records, imaging, and novel research platforms.

Research

We are an interdisciplinary research group comprised of data scientists, bioinformaticians, and sociologists. Using our expertise in data science and bioinformatics, we conduct biomedical research and collaborate with researchers and healthcare professionals on projects that improve clinical practice and enhance patient outcomes.

We aim to strengthen FMUL’s role as a leading institution in biomedical research and address critical challenges in healthcare by:

  • Conducting research to improve the understanding of disease mechanisms, treatments, and healthcare delivery.
  • Combining different disciplines to tackle complex research questions.
  • Translating scientific research into practice, ensuring that results contribute to better patient care.
  • Exploring the societal and ethical dimensions of using health data in biomedical research.

Collaborations

We are ready to collaborate at every stage of the research journey:

  • Developing Ideas: Working with researchers and healthcare professionals to develop ideas into defined research questions and proposals.

  • Securing Funding: Identifying funding opportunities; Assisting in the preparation of, and applying to, grants.

  • Data Management and Analysis: Providing expertise in storing, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data.

  • Publishing and Dissemination: Contributing to high-impact publications.

  • Clinical Integration: Developing practical solutions to translate research findings into tools that can be implemented in the clinic.

Goals

  • Recruit ERA chair team.

  • Promote the acquisition of international research funding.

  • Maximize the use of available data resources.

  • Create a sustainable data science unit at FMUL.

  • Develop skills in data science to pursue large projects with real-world research, translational research or clinical trials.

  • Implement the European Research area vision and priorities, mainly gender mainstreaming in research and the adoption of European Charter of Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.
